Who's the new JP?

Hey guys

I know us HOD freaks mostly discuss chops&flash drummers (alright, I know Vinnie CAN groove), but I stumbled upon this site: http://www.frontiernet.net/~cybraria/jptracks.htm
and I came to thinking, there will never ever be another Jeff "The man with the golden groove" Porcaro but there are some guys out there that really are unbelieveably strong pocketplayers. Interested to know if anyone of you have a favourite to name that seems to never get the credit they deserve? Here's a few of mine: Dan Needham (he's too good), Chris McHugh, Keith Carlock, Leroy McClouden and Matt Chamberlain...... Another thing with Jeff that everybody mentions when talking about him is what a great man he was and the positive energy he brought to a session, that is definently something that I hear when listening to records Jeff played on, and of course his swing and groove, like "floating on a cloud" (Vinnie's words). When Jeff died I felt that Carlos was the only one left who was the same kind of strong pocket player. In the meantime I discovered Matt Chamberlain, Brian Blade but also Andy Newmark (with Seal). Even Tommy Lee is a strong pocket player on one amazing track on Richard Marx's second album (also with Porcaro). Not really new names in drumworld but new and fun for me.

After Jeff died, it was Carlos. After Carlos died, that groove died.

However, there ARE some really great players with that wonderful Pocarco/Vega feel. I always thought Gregg Bissonette would have been the perfect replacement in Toto, and when he sub'd for Simon, I think many people agreed.

I'm also really excited to see how Abe Jr. does. He's doing so well, and he's still in his 20s. As he grows and matures, I think he's going to fill that void created by Jeff and Carlos. Abe is a big man, big heart, big drums, big groove.
